Find the Auto Insurance Requirements in Your State
Each of the fifty states creates its own legislation governing auto insurance. In order to make sure your insurance coverage meets your state’s legal requirements you must first look up the auto insurance laws in your own state. State law will mandate what types of coverage are needed to drive within that state, and the official financial limits your coverage must meet. Once you know what types and amounts of coverage you need to be driving legally, you can decide if, in your specific case, more coverage may be in your best financial interests.
State law will require certain types of coverage, but not all types of coverage. What you choose to purchase above and beyond the required coverage is completely up to your discretion, but if your vehicle is financed, your lender may require that you carry additional coverage the law does not require you to have. Check with your lending company for complete details on their requirements.
